This series features performances by outstanding jazz artists, who comment about their relationship to and feelings about this improvisational art form. The performers include a drummer, a guitarist, a pianist, a vocalist and a saxophonist.
Episode Guide
1. Kenny Burrell — A gifted and articulate guitarist, Burrell describes the history of the blues and jazz, how these musical forms have influenced international music, and how this music is a human language that we all speak.
2. Nancy Wilson and Richie Cole — Vocalist Wilson and saxophonist Cole sing and play together for the first time and explain how musicians communicate with each other and how vocal traditions and jazz instruments have interacted to build the rich voice of jazz.
3. Art Blakey — One of the leading drummers of the 20th century, the late Art Blakey describes the power of the jazz experience, the role of the drummer and other musicians in the group, and how musicians communicate through improvisation and even vibrations.
4. Marian McPartland — An accomplished jazz and classical pianist, McPartland demonstrates a variety of jazz moods, provides a short history of jazz, and offers some personal insights into her long career as a jazz musician.
