Year of Change, A: Leadership in the Principal’s Office

This year, 75 principals trained at the newly created Leadership Academy – a centerpiece of education reform and then – took over schools throughout New York City. The creators of this documentary spent 15 months following three principals through a rigorous year of training, and then as they took over their own schools. This one-hour documentary report examines the process that New York City hopes will create a top-down transformation of failing schools. This leadership approach is being tried in many parts of the country, and has broad appeal to educators nationally.

Episode Guide

1. Leadership in the Principals Office — Follows would-be principals Rafaela, Larry, and Alexandra as they try to determine whether they have what it takes to run one of New York City’s 1,200 public schools. The three attend training at the Leadership Academy, participate in a special leadership workshop led by former General Electric CEO Jack Welch, and then face the challenges of running their own schools.

2. Making the Grade — Follows three new principals in New York City schools, graduates of a special training program aimed at producing leaders who can turn failing schools around, as they settle into their jobs.
